The Beginners Guide to Meditation
Calming Our Minds
Many clients come to me for help with racing thoughts. Often these thoughts interfere with work or school performance and will even cause a disruption in sleep. Using imagery is one way I assist clients with “clearing the clutter” from their minds. Try the following exercise to assist in calming your mind…
Find a comfy chair. Sit and close your eyes. Take a deep breath in through your nose. Notice how the breath feels as it enters your nasal cavity and fills your lungs. Release your breath out slowly through pursed lips. Repeat this process two more times.
With your eyes still closed, imagine a place that makes your soul feel at peace. The beach, the mountains…where ever it is that your mind takes you when you’re daydreaming.
Breathe normally as you think about “your special place.” Imagine it as if you were actually there. What it looks like, smells like, feels like… sounds like. Let your body sink into your comfy chair as you take a “mini vacation” in your mind to help clear the “clutter” and reduce anxiety.
